ABOUT THE AGENT:

Sarah began her publishing career in rights and licensing, starting as a Rights Assistant at Hachette in 2010. After relocating to Sydney, she became Head of Rights, Contracts and International Sales for Hachette Australia and New Zealand. She held the role for nine years, working from both Australia and the UK, and was responsible for licensing rights for Hachette’s Australasian authors across the UK, US, film and TV, and translation markets.

In 2024, seeking a more creative and hands-on role, Sarah joined Darley Anderson & Associates as Acting Head of Rights, covering Georgia Fuller’s maternity leave. It quickly became clear that agenting was the next step in her publishing journey, and she is now thrilled to be building her own list of book club and reading group authors at Darley Anderson & Associates.

Sarah is an ambitious and strategic thinker with a strong background in licensing, contracts, and negotiation. She thrives in collaborative, close-knit teams and is highly results-driven.

She studied Music at Nottingham University and holds a diploma in piano performance. When she’s not reading, you might find her lost in a Rachmaninov concerto.

Keep reading to see if Sarah Brooks is your dream agent!

Learn secrets and proven paths to finding an agent with the book GET A LITERARY AGENT. The guide explains query letter writing, submission dos and don'ts, how to craft engaging opening pages, synopsis FAQs, nonfiction proposal tips, literary agent pet peeves, and much more.

Sarah would like to represent stories with emotional depth, and unforgettable characters and broad book club appeal. She is especially drawn to contemporary and historical fiction that balances commercial accessibility with beautiful writing. Think epic love stories and life-affirming journeys in the vein of Taylor Jenkins Reid, Kristin Hannah or Natasha Lester.

Sarah is excited by smart, concept-driven novels with distinctive voices like THE HUSBANDS by Holly Gramazio, THE NAMES by Florence Knapp or THE MINISTRY OF TIME by Kaliane Bradley. Books that break your heart and stay with you long after you close the cover, stories that make you weep, and novels that make you want to be a better person.

Sarah is especially drawn to sharp, witty, and acerbic humour. She loves stories that make her snigger out loud whilst also prompting her to think more deeply about the world around us. Books that can make her laugh are at the very top of her wish list, so please send them her way!

Sarah would  love to find emotionally resonant brand-savvy authors in the space of Emily Henry or Sophie Kinsella writing warm, witty modern romance – writers who will build an audience and a committed readership. Strong commercial fiction in the vein of Paige Toon or Lucinda Riley.

Sarah loves reading holiday set fiction – Christmas or summer escapes in the spirit of Karen Swan or Nicky Pelligrino but updated for a new generation, would be of strong interest. Diversity and fresh perspectives in this space are a priority – She wants stories that feel both universal and specific, entertaining and necessary. She would love to find a UK-based author who brings the same heart, heat, and storytelling power as Brenda Jackson.

Sarah has a particular passion for historical fiction in a commercial space, that unearths lesser-known histories, or spotlights underrepresented cultures, and amplifies the voices of those whose stories have been previously overlooked. She is especially keen to find fresh, global perspectives and narratives that open a window into the past whilst still resonating with today’s readers and maintaining a commercial, voice driven plot. Whether it’s set in 1920s Shanghai, postwar Italy or a revolutionary middle east; she's looking for richly imagined stories that center on complex women, resilience and where personal and political stories can intersect to create a powerfully educational and resonant narrative; think THE STORM WE MADE by Vanessa Chan, IN MEMORIAM by Alice Winn, and authors like Khaled Hosseini or Anthony Doerr.

Lastly – jokingly but also very seriously – Sarah has an obsession with regency romance: it’s her guilty pleasure. Give her slow-burn tension, witty ballroom banter and a heroine who’s smart and sassy – and she's all in.
