ABOUT THE AGENT:

Phoebe Schmidt joined Britt Siess Creative Management after working as an independent scout and a book-to-film agent at Paradigm Talent Agency.

She works primarily with upmarket science fiction and fantasy. She is a hands on agent with a developmental approach, and loves projects that turn everyday life upside down.

PHOEBE IS SEEKING:

Phoebe is actively growing her list, and has a particular interest in Sci-Fi and Fantasy. She’s always interested in stories by queer and BIPOC authors, and she’s excited to help writers develop their projects in a way that feels most authentic to each of them. This is what’s currently at the top of her wish list:
  • Science Fiction grounded in reality – stories that either warp aspects of everyday life, or explore everyday life in a new world
  • 21st century Magical Realism/Fabulism
  • Sci-Fi and Fantasy blended with elements from other genres like mysteries, romances, etc. Urban Fantasies, Sci-Fi legal dramas, and other creative crossovers are VERY welcome!
  • Stories with unusual narrators or perspectives
  • Expertise; a thorough understanding of the crafts, trades and technologies involved in the plot

She is not a good fit for:
  • Extremely high Sci-Fi/Fantasy with massive worlds, in the vein of DUNE or A GAME OF THRONES
  • Aesthetic over plot
  • Talking down to the reader

Some of her favorite books include PIRANESI by Susanna Clarke, THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA by TJ Klune, THE WOMAN WHO HAD TWO NAVELS by Nick Joaquín, ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE by Gabriel García Márquez, SOURGDOUGH by Robin Sloane, HOW TO LIVE SAFELY IN A SCIENCE FICTIONAL UNIVERSE by Charles Yu, HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE by Diana Wynne Jones, and anything by David Mitchell.
If you think your book might have a few elements of the above but aren’t totally sure, please feel free to query!

HOW TO QUERY:

Please send all queries to [email protected] with “Query” in the subject line.
