ABOUT THE AGENT:

Madelyn Knecht was promoted to Associate Literary Agent at Storm Literary Agency.

Madelyn is an editor, writer, and passionate reader from Texas whose hair changes color on a weekly basis. After falling in love with reading books that made her laugh and cry in equal measure, she started writing her first book at nine and never looked back. She serves as a RevPit board member, where she created the BIPOC Editor Mentorship, and a member of the EFA. When not reading or writing, you can find her playing cozy games like Rune Factory and Stardew Valley, crocheting, picking up a new hobby, or spending time with her two criminal Australian Shepherds and her lovable cat, Lucas.

Madelyn loves queer stories with dark twists and rich worlds, especially in fantasy and light science fiction. Her favorites include Young Adult fantasy and Adult with fantastic characters you can't help but love. Some of her favorite authors include Jonathan Stroud, F.T. Lukens, V.E. Schwab, Liselle Sambury, Freya Marske, Aiden Thomas, and Melissa Caruso.

Her favorite books include the Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud, A Marvelous Light by Freya Marske, The Last Hour Between Worlds by Melissa Caruso, Voyage of the Damned by Frances White, The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall, Their Vicious Games by Joelle Wellington, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, Vicious by V.E. Schwab, Legend of the White Snake by Sher Lee, Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas, Kill Creatures by Rory Powell, Spellbound by F.T. Lukens, the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer, and The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco.

When not reading, editing, or writing, she's crocheting, playing cozy games, or spending time with her two criminal Australian Shepherds and her lovable cat Lucas.

MADELINE IS SEEKING:

Age Groups: Adult, Young Adult, select Middle Grade

Genres: Fantasy (all subgenres), scifi, speculative, horror, mystery

Madeline is looking for one main component in all her submissions: fun. She wants fun books full of magic and whimsy and a bit of comedy. Madeline loves when books make her laugh out loud. But she also wants to be hiding behind her hands reading something spooky. Madeline is looking for a strong voice, and commercial stories with a lyrical edge. Give her a fast-paced plot with solid, beautiful writing she can sink her teeth into. The quickest way to her heart is character. Characters with in-depth, emotional character arcs will take her through almost any book. Madeline wants books with layers that keep her guessing until the last page, and masterfully-handled social or political commentary (in all genres, but especially horror and fantasy) that make her sit back and think about it for days.

Queer books are at the top of Madeline's wish list, as are stories by BIPOC authors. Madeline would LOVE to see some non-Western settings, history, and magic systems.

Adult
  • BIPOC romantasy / queer romantasy
  • Queer dark academia (a la A Dark and Drowning Tide)
  • Horror of all kinds, especially with social commentary
  • Female rage
  • Women supporting women
  • Unreliable narrators
  • Humor (dry humor/deadpan humor and banter moreso than absurdist humor. Think Shaun of the Dead, not Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
  • Lush worlds I want to revisit again and again - or never step foot into because they're so terrifying

Young Adult
  • BIPOC romantasy / queer romantasy
  • Anxiety representation
  • Combining the digital age with magic (KPop Demon Hunters)
  • Twisty psychological horror / thriller
  • Murder mystery with a speculative twist
  • Dark academia that feels fresh

Middle Grade
Madeline is more picky in this area. I don't like a lot of "toilet humor," but would love more books geared towards boys.
  • Fast-paced, heart-pounding fantasy
  • Paranormal with thrilling character dynamics (Lockwood & Co. by Jonathan Stroud)
  • Anxiety representation/neurodivergent representation
  • Utilizing the digital age/phones/social media to help solve problems or make them worse

Some things Madeline loves:
  • A series of games/trials/exams (think the Hunter Exams in HunterxHunter)
  • Contemporary fantasy with heart
  • Seaside settings
  • Atmospheric fantasy and horror
  • Alternate realities
  • Necromancy
  • Unreliable narrators
  • Body horror

Hyper-specific asks:

  • Books for boys that encourage empathy (think Wind Breaker the anime, but in MG or YA – Madeline would LOVE something in this vein)
  • YA or Adult Black horror a la GET OUT or SINNERS
  • Sapphic horror in a unique setting

Madeline is not the best for: religious or faith-based stories, stories featuring suicide, talking animals (unless it’s Rocket the Raccoon), sexual humor, fae/fairies, westerns

Immediate No's: sexual assault, rape, cheating as a plot device, abuser redemption arcs
