In this interview, Victoria Harris answers questions about being an agent... and more! Victoria Harris joined The Caldwell Agency in 2025. Before that, they worked in the editorial side of the publishing industry for over 6 years. Victoria earned an MFA in Fiction Writing from Sarah Lawrence College. In their downtime, they like to write (current work in progress: a novel about queer love) and perform with their indie band (Late Stage Dirtbags). They live in Southern California with their wife, one of their best friends, and their one-eyed chihuahua, Bug. What’s your favorite moment so far of being an agent? Signing my first client! I’m so excited to accompany this author on her publishing journey. What do you love most about agenting? Giving the stories that matter to me a chance to be seen. What do you wish querying writers knew? Pay close attention to each agent’s manuscript wish list. If your book doesn’t match what they’ve described, save yourself time and avoid rejection by not querying them. What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever heard? Write the story you want to read. What interests or hobbies do you have that you’d love to see in a book? As a musician, I’d love a story about an underground/indie band! What book or author made you fall in love with reading? Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie series, especially On the Banks of Plum Creek. As I child, I related to young Laura. What author would you love to have dinner with? James Baldwin, if he were alive. What’s the number one thing you would change in the publishing industry, if you could? I would love to see the publishing industry become more diverse and I aim to be an active participant in making this happen. People whose lived experiences differ from the dominant narrative need to be heard and respected. What do you believe is your strength as an agent? As a writer myself, I understand where my clients are coming from and how to provide constructive editorial feedback and moral support. WHAT VICTORIA IS SEEKING: Victoria’s heart belongs to stories that feature LGBTQ+ and BIPOC protagonists. They are primarily seeking literary fiction, upmarket fiction, and queer romance. They’re also open to literary-leaning sci-fi (grounded, set in the near future) and historical fiction (set in the recent past). When it comes to nonfiction, they’re interested in memoirs.
